Water

Our ability to grow is directly related to the availability and quality of local water sources. Our integrated approach involves using water more efficiently in our operations and engaging in public-private partnerships to protect watersheds and raise public awareness of their importance. This approach is underpinned by our support of the CEO Water Mandate as well as our water stewardship policy.

Water-use efficiency

Water-use efficiency

For a third consecutive year we have reduced our absolute water use. In 2010, we used 27,300 million litres of water and achieved a water use ratio of 2.30.

As we continue to grow and therefore use more water, it is increasingly important to further improve water efficiency. We are investing in emerging technologies to improve water recycling and implement systems to capture, purify and reuse rinse water in polyethylene terephthalate (PET) aseptic filling lines.

Wastewater management

Our goal is to ensure that all wastewater is treated. During 2010, we constructed a further three on-site wastewater treatment plants. Currently, 97 per cent of wastewater is treated and we aim to reach 100 per cent by the year-end.

Community partnerships

Water is a major focus of our environmental programmes. It is an essential ingredient in our products and has an important function in the manufacturing process. We understand that protection of water resources will not only help in maintaining our status as one of the world’s leading bottlers of non-alcoholic beverages in a manageable way, but also assist in supporting the sustainable development of the communities we serve.

In order to safeguard and preserve community water resources, we work together with international and local government organisations, conservation groups, educational institutions, industry bodies and others.

Our engagement involves a wide range of activities, from preservation measures aimed at effective water use and prevention of polluting activities, to the protection of marine life, plants and animals along with clean-up activities and recycling projects.

We seek to achieve positive, measurable results through proactive efforts at local, national and international levels.
