General community development

Our involvement in, and support for, communities is as varied and diverse as the cultures and traditions of the inhabitants across our 28 countries.

Beyond our key areas of focus, contributions are made that reflect the needs and concerns of specific societies as well as some that are universal, and cover virtually every aspect of life.

Welfare activities

Community welfare activities include providing equipment and facilities for hospitals and schools, the renovation of a vocational training centre and supporting the creation of a shelter for homeless people. Repairs to places of worship and refurbishing premises for police and firemen have also been carried out.

At the personal level, we care for those with special needs, helping to:

• raise awareness of breast cancer
• assist single mothers and women who have become victims of violence
• support treatment for people with psychiatric problems and help the disabled to return to the workforce
• provide aid to children with cancer and muscular disorders
• bring medical assistance to the very poor
• Other contributions of a similar nature involve blood donation drives, the donation of guide dogs for the blind, and sponsoring first aid training together with the Red Cross.

Youth education campaigns

Protection of young people from social ills is especially relevant in most modern societies, and we engage in campaigns to inform and warn youngsters about the dangers of drug taking and drink-driving while participating in programmes to encourage ethical behaviour and career development.

To further assist in directing youth on productive paths, we supply educational materials to schools, encourage reading and offer scholarships for higher education.

Sports and culture

In addition to the major sporting programmes conducted by the company, we cater to the interests of many other athletes by sponsoring a wide range of activities including volleyball, golf, sailing, basketball, cycling and swimming.

Cultural life of communities is not neglected, and we assist in the presentation of numerous musical and dance performances reflecting local traditions, as well as art exhibitions, concerts, film festivals and entertainments on special occasions, such as Christmas celebrations.

In order to effectively engage with communities, and maximise the benefits of our engagement, we work with many hundreds of organisations, locally and internationally.
